Elida, OH- The Redskins rolled into Elida with one thought on their mind Tuesday night- A WBL Championship. After the final whistle blew and the last arm was raised, the Skins are now one step closer to achieving that goal. Before a large crowd, Wapak defeated the defending WBL Co-Champions 49-19 and, while not a lock, they have put themselves in a good position to repeat as league Champions. Unlike last year’s nip and tuck match, the Skins jumped out to an early lead and refused to to take their foot off the gas. Leading the way with pins were Evan Kaeck, Caleb Pyles, Luke Beach, and Jayden Hefner. The Skins were victorious in 10 of the 14 weight classes.
The Redskins warmed up nicely in the opener against Kenton, easily handing the the Wildcats an 82-0 defeat. Leading the way for Wapak with pins were Jayden Hefner, Koleman Brown, Trevor Plaugher, Evan Kaeck, Zach Miller, Landon Hall, Keaton Elling, and Luke Beach.
Defiance faced Elida in a battle of WBL Bulldogs in the opening round of matches with Elida. Defiance turned in a solid performance and defeated Elida 47-24. Defiance also defeated Kenton 72-6 in their night’s other match. The wins put Defiance into second place in the dual meet standings and keeps them in the hunt for the WBL title.
Wapak now sits alone atop the WBL standings followed by Defiance, Elida, and Bath. The WBL dual meet portion of the season accounts for half of the WBL Championship with the WBL individual tournament accounting for the remainder. The Redskins have Saint Marys as the only Team on their schedule standing between them and and undefeated WBL dual meet season.
The Varsity travels to Northeast Ohio this weekend to compete in the, always tough, Top Gun Tournament in Alliance.
Other WBL wrestling action taking place in Ottawa on Tuesday night saw Shawnee drop a pair of matches to OG 50-16 and St. Marys 44-22. Also, St. Marys and OG both defeated Van Wert.
